Verizon Center: Knicks at Wizards, April 3, 2015

April in the northeast, how might a new’ish couple spend their first weekend away together you may ask…. A Weekend trip to DC to see the cherry blossoms, of course!  Except this wasn’t like any other Spring drive down to DC….  the clouds were angry my friends, the rain came pouring down hard as Rich insisted on getting us there in 4 hours, and Sapna held on tight wondering if he will always be this stubborn.  To top it off the relentless downpour, Sapna was in the middle of having to make a very important decision in the hours ahead.  You see, Sapna had been working on trying to get into a PhD program for quite some time.  She interviewed at schools all over the nation, and it came down to two schools, her top choices-- NYU and USC, both fighting over her, and trying to beat out the other by offering better packages, literally negotiating hour by hour.  In a moment of complete desperation, and, at times, not knowing whether Rich’s driving would get them into an accident at any moment, Sapna went to her Dad for guidance.  And while he was exactly as supportive as he always would be, sadly, the conversation left her even more confused.  So, what do you do in the middle of a long drive, a decision to be made, all in the middle of a terrifying rain storm??  Go on stubhub and buy NBA tickets for tonight’s game, of course!

The Knicks were in perhaps the worst season they have ever had, their last pre-Unicorn season and Melo was out after the all star break with an injury.  Our main threat was Andrea Bargnani, who is now, thankfully, out of the NBA. We got to the arena after the first quarter had ended, which proved to be a blessing in disguise because apparently the ‘Bockers scored just ten (10!) points in that quarter.  The Knicks didn’t do much better thereafter but it was good to see John Wall play and he ended up with 18 assists (one more than the entire Knicks team, but we digress). We consoled ourselves, saying that it was going to be a good NBA draft, and if we tanked enough we might be able to draft the 19-year old Latvian kid every New Yorker was clamoring for... (ok, we weren’t that clairvoyant... we were excited by Karl-Anhtony Towns though).

It was the first NBA game either of us had seen outside of our hometowns-- needless to say, it was a lot of fun, and the start of a journey that was waiting to be discovered.
